Making a Pumpkin Spice Latte From Scratch

It’s pumpkin spice latte season!

Or at least according to Instagram it is. I, on the other hand, live in an area without a Starbucks in sight. I literally can’t even drive to one. I’ve never had the pleasure to travel somewhere and try one out (thanks, covid travel restrictions).

Instead I decided to make my own from scratch. I love picking popular fast foods like pizzas and takeaways and making them at home, so this seemed like a great one to kick off the autumn season. In the spirit of this blog, I also made it vegan, so no animals were harmed in the making of this popular drink!

First step was to make the pumpkin spice. It felt very old-timey to mix all the spices together in a wooden grinding bowl. The ingredients for this were cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves. It was easy to do and took me less than a minute. The mixture smelt like Christmas.

The recipe I was following called for 2 cups milk, pumpkin puree and sugar to get mixed on a medium heat. I swapped out regular milk for Innocent hazelnut milk, which was a lot darker in colour than I hoped for but actually gave the latte a gorgeous nutty taste as a result.  

I also got regular tinned pumpkin puree. In previous years I’ve made my own, but it ended up being a lot of effort for very minimal results. Between buying a pumpkin, de-fleshing it, baking the flesh, then mixing it into a puree, the end result didn’t even taste great. I’d recommend the tinned stuff on this one.

Then it was time to add some vanilla, pumpkin pie spice, fresh coffee and whisk it all together. It smelled absolutely divine.

I poured it into a cup and sprinkled some pumpkin pie spice on top. The resulting drink was absolutely beautiful. You could never have guessed it was vegan. It tasted like a Christmas dessert in one drink.

If I had to do anything different, I’d buy some vegan whipped cream (or try to make it myself) to make it look even better. I would also love some vegan marshmallows to have on top too. It looked a little bare by the end, which didn’t do justice to the taste.

It turns out, you don’t have to make one of these lattes brand new! Making it myself ended up way more fun!
